Farewell to our Favorite Principal, Dr. Argent

Dear Lake Myra Elementary School Community:

It is with mixed emotions that I send you this letter.  At last night’s Wake County Public School System Board of Education meeting, I was named the Principal of Knightdale High School.  Although I am excited and thrilled to begin this new journey, I am saddened at the prospects of no longer being the Principal of the BEST Elementary School in the world!  My official start date at Knightdale High School will be July 1, 2014.

Five years ago, I was named the first principal of Lake Myra Elementary School.  I began with a vision that we would prepare every single person in the school community for their future by creating a safe, loving, and nurturing environment with high expectations for all!  I believe we are well on our way to fulfilling that vision.  Our staff is second to none and filled with excellent leaders.  Our students have embraced The Leader in Me philosophy and are performing at unprecedented levels. Our school community is healthy and will continue to flourish.  My personal mission statement is to leave a legacy of love and leadership to all that I touch.  I truly believe that we have built a legacy of excellence at Lake Myra that will endure forever.

I hope that I get to see many of you before school ends and even more of you as your children enter high school!   In the coming days, Dr. Edward McFarland will set up a community meeting for parent input regarding the next principal of Lake Myra.  Dr. McFarland is as passionate as I am about the success of Lake Myra and the continued success of The Leader in Me.  I am sure he would love your input on the next principal.

The first letter I wrote to the Lake Myra community began with a favorite quote of mine, so I only find it fitting to end my last letter with the same quote.  Ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu stated, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”   The next journey for Lake Myra and Jim Argent is about to begin on July 1.  I know it will be an amazing journey for all of us!  I love you and will always be part of the Lake Myra School Community!

With Love,
Dr. Jim Argent

"Leader in Me" Survey

We would love your feedback about the implementation of "The Leader In Me" here at Lake Myra. Please take a couple of minutes to fill out this survey and let us know how it has impacted your kids at school as well as at home.

We need your thoughts by Friday, June 13th... Thank you.

Helping Hands for Haiti

We wanted to inform everyone about the service project that the student ambassadors are organizing at Lake Myra called, 'Helping Hands for Haiti'. Some of you may know Kednal Civil(Mr. Zo)... he is one of our night custodians. He has been diligently and single-handedly collecting school supplies for students in his native island of Haiti, and we thought we could give him a hand. From June 10th until June 26, there will be a big, blue bin located in the main office hallway. We are going to be asking parents, staff, and community members to donate what they can to provide school supplies for children in Haiti. Our ambitious goal is to collect the following:

500 #2 pencils
500 rulers
500 pencil sharpeners
500 single subject notebooks
500 rubber erasers
500 blue ink pens

Our student ambassadors have worked really hard on this, but we need the whole school to get involved. It's a great way to "Think Win-Win" and teach our kids the joy of giving, as we help the students in Haiti experience the joy of learning. Thanks so much for your support!

These bright, colorful hangings bring a child-centered, creative and arts friendly atmosphere to our school. Using vibrant fabric dyes, students enjoyed learning silk painting techniques to complete these wonderful banners.  The theme of this legacy gift Otters at Lake Myra. This residency is a great way to encourage a community spirit at our school, as the artist encourages all school staff and parents to participate!

Gran’daddy Junebug
Friday, November 15 at 9:30 a.m.

Continuing his family tradition of preserving culture, “Gran’daddy Junebug” teaches personal responsibility, finding the right path, coping with peer pressure, being true to self, always striving for excellence and respect for self and others through the African oral tradition of “call and response.” This highly energetic program utilizes a tremendous amount of audience participation (as he shares his wisdom) which has students learning life lessons as they experience the time of their young lives. One principal wrote, “I’ve been in education for 35 years and this is the BEST cultural arts program I ever witnessed in my entire career”!
            What folks are saying…
"…this past Thursday morning, as I sat front row-center, with that same little girl in arm...I was proud to share the time with her in your presence...your message rocked her world...and mine.  I often say that BEING an artist helps me be a better human...EXPERIENCING your mastery of art certainly stirred the "better human" in me! Thank you, sir for being and doing." Check out his website at  jgbug.com
